fUn DaY!!

Instead of working on projects that have some sort of deadline, I PLaYeD today in my studio!!
I made some Valentine's Day ornaments or gift toppers.
I do plan on having a tutorial for them, although I know you can probably figure them out on your own, they are very simple.
My secret sister from last quarter, Tina, wanted to do a Spring Cottage swap and I was game!!
We decided to swap three cottages made from Nanette's infamous Christmas Cottage Tutorial made in the colors of spring. I tell you, these cottages are so addicting and so fun to make for every season!! I know I'll be doing one for Halloween, so heads up!
I had so much fun selecting fabrics since I don't usually use pastels, but I'm enchanted with the idea of a Spring Cottage Quilt!
I also prepared a primitive flower applique for my Calendar Quilt. I'll post pics of that when I'm done applying it.
Have a creative day!

Info Overload!! . . Where to start??

I have found some FUN blogs/sites that I want to share AND I still want to tell you about Wednesday's adventures at the quilt shops. Where to start.....where to end for tonight? How about one quilt shop review with purchase report and two web places to visit? So. I have been contacted by a very nice lady Leigh (I don't know from where!) who comes to Utah (Park City) once a winter for family time and skiing for a week. She asked for my suggestion as which quilt shop she should visit while here. No prob! Here's a list of GREAT quilt shops that will not disappoint!
My recommendations for the Salt Lake area:
To clarify, within a 15 minute radius of the mouth of the canyon leading up to Park City
Leigh said she as already been to Piper's (and liked it! and then asked which quilt shop she should go to if she could only make it to ONE. ONE!
So I says to Leigh, I says "My recommendation for Mormon Handicraft is twofold, great selection of fabrics and the ‘Mormon culture’ which is NOT overbearing, just a presence. They also have a bake right there in the shop and their rolls are
to die for!"
"At Whimsy, I personally know Nancy the owner and she's a really, really neat lady. I could spend hours there talking with her. Fun, funky, original and colorful are some adjectives I would easily use to describe Nancy's shop."
"Elaine's is larger than the two, staff is very nice and I have always found great inspiration there, although I haven't visited for a while."
Well, as a Utah quilter, I decided that is was my duty to 'scout' the shops I was suggesting and offer pictures so she could decide which shop best suited her.
So, with out further ado, I introduce you to . . .
MORMON HANDICRAFT
This quilt shop is situated in the top part of Deseret Book. Also up there is a gorgeous fine art gallery to the right.
The two little ones are with me, my nephew and my son. We are at the top of the stairs or the 'front' of the store.
Along the back wall and cutting area.
The small cafe wafts welcoming smells right as you enter the store!
I really should have saved this for last because I got the SUPEREST BIGGEST DEAL here!! This stunning upholstery 60" wide Amy Butler fabric was 75% off!!!! Which made it around $3.50 per yard!!!!

A Little Quilt Show

One of my 2009 goals is to make at least 1 table runner or wall hanging per month.
This is my January project, it's a small wall hanging from the book Bits and Pieces. I used a fabric line by Buggy Barn.
This quilt was outside of my comfort zone in that it contained hearts. Yea, lots of them! I am not a mushy, lovey type of person, but I like the more primitive style of the hearts (elongated).
I hand appliqued the hearts then hand quilted the piece. I got it soaking wet and let it air dry to achieve the wrinkled look. I'm happy with the results.
Yesterday I worked at the shop (Sew Sweet). I took some pictures of original quilts they have designed for your viewing pleasure.
This was last year's (2008) Shop Hop Quilt. The theme for the hop was "Once Upon a Time". Sew Sweet chose Goose Girl. It's a young adult fantasy novel by a Utah author Shannon Hale. The story is based on a Brother's Grimm tale by the same name.
I tell you, the picture does not do it justice! There are three-dimensional elements in the quilt (for which Sew Sweet is known for). The little flower buds that surround the outer border are 3-D, as are the 'pinwheels'. The 'picots' have a small yellow piping trimming the 3-D triangles. Lakehouse fabrics were used.

This quilt is a companion piece to the Goose Girl quilt and is done in the popular pink and light greens. It is a throw size. The 'geese' are three-dimentional, the quilt is made mostly with Lakehouse fabrics.

This is a quilt made from the shop's quilt from two years ago's Shop Hop. The theme was "Everyone's A Star" in which the shops chose movies to represent and Sew Sweet chose A Field of Dreams. The original quilt was done in all shades of green, symbolising a green field. The next quilt was designed especially for an event in Delta, Utah. Every year they have a Snow Goose Festival and along with that there is a quilt show and classes. Marta will be teaching this quilt. It is crib sized, the flowers have a very small piping outlining the petals.
Well, that's my show! If you enjoyed the quilts, send off a note to Sew Sweet and tell them! They'll be tickled!
