2009

Hope you all had a great holiday!

The end of last year was a busy and hectic one for me.  I apologize for being slack on replying to the comments that have been made here.  I hope I haven't permanently lost any friends because of it.

I purchased a calendar and am trying to prioritize and schedule my life so I can get to some point of normalcy.  Sewing and blogging have taken a back seat for long enough!

First project of 2009 was a quick one.  I had purchased an ugly pocket calendar 1/2 off knowing I could spruce it up.

I went to Fancy Tiger, a stellar shop - I think I'll try to get half of hubby's paycheck auto deposited there.  They have Japanese fabrics, patterns and trims GALORE!!

I found these fabrics 30% off!

I made a little slip cover for the ugly cover of the pocket calendar.  (Yes, it's a tad short.)  I had some iron on transfer letters I used to personalize it.  Not a work of art, but I love the fabric so much and I need a calendar of some sort - so, it's perfect for me!

Update on Lissa:

They think they have all the infection out of her insides, they did have to remove her whole large intestine and her kidneys haven't started up again and they think she still has a blood clot near her liver.  They have removed lots of fluids, so she is looking a lot better.  She had a tracheotomy and the respirator was applied to that.  She is conscious now so she is able to smile - HUGE progress!!

Your prayers and positive thoughts have been greatly appreciated and put to good use - thank you!!

Lissa Update

Lissa (who?) has an intestinal infarcment in her small intestine, which means a part of the small intestine has died.  She also has a blood clot by her liver.

They are moving her to the surgical ICU and will be doing surgery to take out the dead part of the intestine and fix it up either tonight or tomorrow.  They aren't able to give any blood thinner for the clot until after the surgery.

They have had to give her anti-anxiety medicine the past few days and had to increase her oxygen again.

She has been less responsive the last few days.  She will open her eyes when they say her name but won't respond in any other way.  The nurse said that she's not following commands anymore, like squeezing their hands.

Her stomach and intestines are not working so they had to put her feeding tube right into her vein

The picture here of Lissa is during one of our many, many Hand and Foot games at our parents-in-law's.  She always wins, and she always drinks Pepsi.  I don't think there's a correlation.

Good, (not so) Bad, and the Ugly

{Good}

On my right side bar is a list of things I wanted to accomplish this year. Designing an owl of some sort was on the list, but we can put a check on that one! I took lots of pictures while making this birdie and I hope to make a tutorial soon. (Just in case you are interested.)

Click here for the Owl Tutorial!

not so {Bad}

I don't really have a picture for this title, but it hasn't been too bad that my hubby has taken two weeks off of work!! Urban and I have loved having him around!

the {Ugly}

I think you'll agree the title is accurate for this picture! This is my right wrist just a couple of days after my carpal tunnel surgery. It's totally worth it though and I'm healing nicely - I can even cut and sew fabric now! I may have to get the other wrist done!

Special thanks to my mother-in-law, Geri who took me in and helped me run errands!

Day with Brock

Today I went to Brock's class for Autism Awareness Day. I didn't know what to expect knowing that there would be 8 to 10 kids who were autistic in the class.
This class has 8 to 10 students all of whom are severely autistic. Kindergarten through second grade is conducted within the one class room. There are at least 6 teachers and/or aids, almost 1 for each child. The class room is inside a public school and is publicly funded.
As we entered the class room, the first thing I noticed was that the lights were off. I had forgotten that most people with autism are sensitive to light, sounds, touch etc. Almost all the kids were barefoot. They all had shirts that they had previously decorated for this day.
Lissa, Brock's mom, and I walked up behind Brockers and said "Hi Brockers!" he stayed focused on his painting project. "Brock, hi!" Nothing. His teacher turned his head so he would see us and he got this look like "I know YOU! What are you doing HERE?" After it settled in, he got so excited, stood up, grabbed our hands and started jumping up and down. It was so fun to see that he was excited that we were there!!
He took us all around the room as if to show us all of the wonderful things the class room had to offer. He wore us like bracelets for the rest of the day! He wouldn't sit down at an activity unless there were two additional chairs for his mom and me.
I had expected kind of a general chaos, but when we arrived, all the kids were engaged in some sort of activity. There were 'stations' for painting, filling Easter eggs with rice or beans to make shakers, and my favorite was a table with bins for each child that contained an egg. Kids were encouraged to break the egg and feel the slimy, gooey, wet texture of the inside and the hard delicate outer shell. Of course many of the kids tried to eat the egg!
When is was snack time, they had a picture board where the kids were required to construct a sentence and vocalise that they wanted something to eat or drink. The picture squares were "I want" "Cookies" "To eat" "Please". Instead of cookies, they could put drink, candy etc. I had no idea Brock could construct and verbalise a sentence! His read like this "I want" "Cookie" "Please" "To eat". When he was done with his selection, he would raise his hand, reach for the board and repeat his request. Snacks were sugar cookies with yellow icing and sherbet in a cup with Sprite! Dee-lish!
Brock can speak which is to say he can say words, he just doesn't communicate. He can spell every name he encounters and will throw out numbers randomly. It's cute, you'll ask him if he wants hamburgers or nuggets and he'll reply "2, 3. 2, 3." We think numbers are code for things he really wants! ;)
Before recess, the kids are checked to see if they need their diapers changed. I don't think any of them can use the restroom on their own. Outside, Brock leads us to his favorite activities, the slide and swings! It was a blustery day, but it didn't matter!
When we get back inside, the kids take off their coats and one girl takes off her shirt too. Another child sees this and thinks it's a good idea so off comes his shirt! When shirts are all back on, the Kindergartners, about half of the class, are harnessed for the busses. They wear a harness that attaches to an apparatus on the seat of the buss so they aren't roaming around and stay safe. A couple of aids accompany them on the buss to keep all in order.
Of the kids who remain, some go to the computers and the rest of us dance to music as selected by DJ Brock! He knows all the songs by number and will get all the appropriate props for each song. Bubbles for "Bubbles in the Air", alphabet flip chart for "Sounds of the Alphabet" and then he grabs me as a dance partner for "Freeze". We hold hands and dance real silly until the music stops randomly throughout the song at which point we stop in motion and Brock whispers "FREEZE!" Two rounds of this and I was beat!
Throughout the day, a girl in Brock's class comes to sit on my lap. She snuggles up to me and looks closely into my eyes and just smiles. She doesn't talk, just grunts, shouts, hops and smiles. A couple of times the aids warn me that she will hit at any time. I think it's an affectionate thing, but she never did.
When it was time for me to go, I said "Bye Brockers". He flatly said "No." They had to distract him while I slipped out. I had a GREAT time with Brock in HIS environment, where HE is the normal one and I am a visitor in HIS world. I'm so glad he accepted me whole heatedly to be a part of HIS day.
I love my Brockers!

Market Bags

I got two Market Bags (pattern by Portabello Pixie) done!! They are reversable!
The one on the left is for my super generous sister-in-law Lori. Lori knows how hard it is for me not to have 'me time' and is so nice to have Urban go over to her fun home one day a week (sometimes more) for a play day.
She's been doing this since I don't know when, Urban is 3 1/2 years old and I can't remember when he didn't get his play date! Lori has a son, Scotty who is 3 months older than Urban. The two boys play so well together, it's great for Urban to be around so many people who love him.
The bag on the right is for my friend Tessa who won my One World One Heart Giveaway. Yes I am belated in getting the gift to her, but it is with her permission! She said that she likes the anticipation of receiving a gift so if I was a bit slow, it would be OK. Whew!
These bags are going to two really great ladies and it was a privilege to give them something I handmade just for them.

OP Top

Well, I had a ball making these fun blocks! Thanks Pat for the challenge to work with ORANGE! Prior to this weekend, the only time I used orange was to make pumpkin appliques. Don't get me wrong, I do like orange, just never thought about it as a focus color I guess! This quilt top will get a border of all the scraps I trimmed off the blocks. I will work on that during this week, and then get some Minky for the back and the quilt will be ready for Thurber Herkamer Lawrence!! (No, that's not his real name, just a name we all call him since his parents haven't decided yet!) The little one is due to arrive this April. OH! And even though I had a wonderful time during my first cyber retreat, it was accentuated today by finding out that I won an ORANGE GIVEAWAY!!!! Thanks to Natalie from School of Crafts Like me, she constructed the block differently (not like mine or Pat's) and she did some darling coasters out of the OP block that you should check out - real easy and fun!

A Day of Pictures!!

My secret sister from last quarter, Tina and agreed to swap 3 Spring Cottages - these are what Tina sent me!! Don't they exude springy happiness?? I love them! Oh, and she even offered to make a triangle for my Dear Jane quilt!! How nice is that? Thanks so much Tina!! I love it all!!
So while I was on a girl's weekend a few weeks ago, my sis in law, Michelle caught the quilting bug!!! NO I didn't twist her arm, she did it of her own free will knowing that it can be quite consuming.
She picked up some real fun fabrics for table runners, basket liners and in true quilter fashion, she bought fabric FOR NO REASON AT ALL!! She's a natural!
She's seen all my cute cottages I've been swapping and thought she'd give them a try. She followed Nanette's great tutorial and whipped up six wonderful cottages!! She gave three to me, and kept three for herself. Didn't she do a great job??
I spent a wonderful day in my studio today!
Urban played pretty well while I sewed and we watched Lion King and the Muppet Movie.
Ironically, none of the pictures I have to show you on this post are from today's sewing! I think you'll enjoy them just the same!
This past holiday weekend I had the opportunity to sew and sew and sew!! My sister's in law and I set up 'shop' up at my mother in law's basement and had three full days of bliss!!
I worked on my Calendar Quilt Challenge. I thought it would be fun to applique a primitive flower to the top of the strip panel I have thus far. I also scalloped the bottom of a set of strips and appliqued them in place. I did this twice because I didn't like the fabric I had appliqued them to the first time. I'm happy with it now (as pictured). I think I'm caught up to the end of February.
I also cut squares to do some hexagons (my first ever!) for Hexagon's of Hope. Check out the cause to help the Victorians who have been effected in Australian's horrible fires.
I also worked on some Happy Houses for a swap started by Lurline in Australia. Kathy is the hostess for the American gals. I still have to 'wonky' them by adding skewed borders all around each block, but it's a good start!
When we finally left the house at 7:30pm, I found a package from Nanette in the mail box!!! I had ordered a kit for her darling Mixed Bag because I love bags, and more importantly, I love the fabrics she puts into the kits!!!
I was so ecstatic to receive the delicious fabrics she sent!! I don't have time in my sewing schedule, but I WILL make this bag by next week for sure!!
True to Nanette's style, she added some extras! A lovely note on a darling birdie card, one of her famous and original Doll House Cottage pot holders, (follow the link to make your own!) some ric-rak for the top of the bag and a charming covered button, also for the bag. Thanks Nanette!! You are very generous!!
Thanks for hanging in there for this long post!
Have a CREATIVE day!!

A Day of Art

On Friday I got to go to an Art Market in Sugarhouse (Utah) with my friends Kathy and Deanie (my mother-in-law). It wasn't as big as I expected, but I was inspired and glad I went. I did pick up a few items. The theme was Valentine's which is not my favorite so maybe the next one (in May) will be better. Kathy thought it might be fun to sell some of the baskets we make at one of the shows. It's a juried show, so we auditioned a basket I made and the organizer of the event said that she loved it and would 'accept' us as vendors if we wanted. We'll see, I kind of don't like my baskets going to people I don't know, I'd rather give them to friends than to sell them to strangers!

We also ended up at Pine Needles, a quilt shop and embroidery shop in Gardner Village. I purchased some fabric that I would not normally have bought, but I'm involved in Pat Sloan's Orange Challenge Sew Along February 20th -22nd, so I thought the pieces would work well for that.

Fabirc, Gifts and a Basket

Oh, I have lots of fun stuff to show you!
First off, how do I look? I got a makeover!! Well my blog did anyway! I had won a free blog makeover, professionally done, from one of the giveaway sites I love! (Bloggy Giveaways)
Shera from Sweet N Simple Design did a wonderful job didn't she?? I wonder if she could do as well if she were to give the real me a makeover!!? If you love my new look, won't you please go over to Shera's and tell her so?
Second, and this may come as a nuisance, I've learned how to create collages with my pictures!! I will probably over use this knowledge, but please allow me to play!
And on we go . . .
Right before I left for my annual sis/mom-in-law retreat in sunny/warm St. George, I was surprised to see a package in my mail box.
I opened it up, and to my utter astonishment found a wristlet made from the feminine fat quarter I had sent to Sherri!! Isn't it a riot? Well, I knew just what I would use it for - my Bingo bag for the weekend!!
My dauber, iPod, gum and some chapstick fit perfectly and I sported it as I toured the casino. Boy did I look smart and sassy!
Now I use it to carry everything for my embroidery project I'm working on.
Sherri assured me she had enough fabric to make one for herself as well, THANKS SHERRI!
Here is some fabric I picked up while on my girl's trip. We went to five (?) quilt shops!!
There are a few pieces that I had purchased from Jane's shop, and I threw them in the collage as well.
What am I going to do with all this cotton? I'm going to GIVE some away during my MAKEOVER EVENT! Stay tuned for that! January 26th - 29th
My dear friend Cheryl (no blog) made me this awesome melon basket for Christmas. Notice the three dimensional braid on top of the handle? Wowsers! It was full of fun stuff, a book, gift card to a quilt shop, gift card to Barnes and Noble and homemade jams.
Cheryl is a very good and generous friend and I love her so much!
I hope you've had a chance to enter my giveaway for One World, One Heart giveaway and will come back during the MAKEOVER EVENT January 26 - 29!

Interview

My friend Tessa was interviewed and posted her answers on her blog. Then she asked if there was anyone that wanted to be interviewed by her and I said "Why not?" She asked me the following questions: 1. What is one of your goals for the new year?
I would like to complete at least one table runner per month. I HAVE completed one for January and am working on a couple for February! (Pics as soon as I can get them downloaded!)
2. What is the best vacation you've ever been on?
My hubby and I love to take road trips. I think my favorite was in 2001 when we toured Highway 1 down the west coast. We've done it twice, but the first time was the most fun because it was spontanious.
I do LOVE girl's weekends though and ALL of them have been way fun!! I can't say that any ONE was better than another as long as there is fabric, chocolate and Diet Coke there!
3. What was the last book you read, and what did you think of it?
The last book I read (audio) was Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
I really liked it. Loved the story, loved that the main charicter was a strong woman, loved the politics of it. I would not want to live in a world that was like the one in the novel, but it made one think, and think, and think. At times it was very redundant, but I would give it 4 stars.
4. When did you start sewing and how did you get interested in it?
My first official sewing lesson was the summer after the 6th grade. I was enrolled in a 'sewing camp' for a couple of weeks. My next experience was in a 'home ec' class in high school. I can't remember what I did, but I didn't love it.
I first learned to QUILT when I was about 16. A lady in my church taught the girls to sew a simple 9 patch wall hanging. I LOVED it!! No matching darts, pleats, or buttons. Just simple sewing and combining beautiful fabrics! I did about two more, but it wasn't until about 5 years later that I took quilting full on! I bought into a quilt shop and was as happy as a perfect 1/4 inch seam!
QUILTING is my passion, not sewing - and those that quilt know what I'm talking about! ;)
5. What other crafts do you like to do besides sewing?
I love to basket weave! I meet with 5 other ladies once a month to weave baskets. I love to decorate my surroundings with colors and textures that I love, inside and outside. I've done scrapbooking and like to do it, but get overwhelmed very quickly.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Now, are any of you willing to be interviewed by ME?

Follow these instructions:

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."

2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. I get to pick the questions.

3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.

4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.

5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

I hate to do this, but . . .

I may have jumped the gun a bit! This weekend is just not a good weekend to rush a MAKEOVER GIVEAWAY, so at the risk of sounding flakey, I'm going to postpone the event until Monday, January 26th. I will have more time to round up and make prizes and think up a free pattern and a couple of games too! I will post my new look as soon as it is ready, so watch for that sometime this weekend! I can not tell you enough how great Shera of Sweet n' Simple Blog Designs is!! She is so good at working with me and understanding what I like! So, consider this as a SAVE THE DATE announcement if you please.
MEL'S MAKEOVER GIVEAWAY
JANUARY 26TH - JANUARY 29TH
I will be posting the One World~One Heart GIVEAWAY this coming Monday, January 19th so make sure you get in on that one! I will draw a winner on February 11th at 11:00pm MST.
NOTICE: I put up a poll on the left sidebar. Could you participate please?

Little Projects

Here's a couple of little projects.
I made this table runner for my mom-in-law for Christmas this year. The original pattern didn't have any borders, but my MIL has a large oak table (not pictured) so I thought the runner needed some more substance. I like how the two borders look, I'm pleased with the whole project. I quilted it on my sewing machine very simply.
The Daisey wall hanging is from a magazine from a few years back. I had made a few of them, one for my mom, mom-in-law, a good friend and one for me! I hand quilted them. NOTE: Pat Sloan recognized the darling wall hanging as HER design that was in Americal Patchwork and Quilting magazine! Thanks Pat!
Hey, the two look great together don't they? Maybe I'll keep the table runner for myself! ;)

What did I get?

Glad you asked! I was so excited to get a gift certificate from my sis-in-law (we draw names) to Spoonflower! One can upload a design and they print it on fabric! So you can be a fabric designer! I can't wait to try it and I hope I don't get too addicted! I got subscriptions to McCall's Quilting, Fons & Porter quilting magazines. A gift certificate to Arnie's (where I get my basket weaving supplies!) Gift card to my FAV place to eat; Texas Roadhouse The coolest necklace sets from an Etsy shop I happened upon called Polarity . I told my hubby about the sewing one I wanted and my sister heard me talking about how cool it was and called the designer to have a quilting set made up for me too! I thought it was soooo cool that Cat, the owner, would make a special order set for no extra charge! I also got iPod speakers, clothes, some craft books such as how to bind books, and a trendy sewing book! I got so much creative stuff that my head is spinning trying to figure out where to begin! I think I'm going to have a fun and creative 2009!
